How to win the talent war…

By Jim Whitt During one 24 hour period I had four interesting conversations. Conversation #1: Someone in a key position with a large retail organization told me how the manager of one their stores came to him complaining about how poorly she is treated by her supervisor and her supervisor’s supervisor. The store manager is doing a good job — she manages their top performing store. The two supervisors’ behavior is a reflection of the CEO’s behavior. The store manager is actively looking for another job. The company spends next to nothing developing their people. Employees are just numbers —… Read More

What we can learn from a delayed flight, Simon Sinek and Martin Luther King

By Jim Whitt I was on my way home from a speaking engagement when thunderstorms backed up all the flights at DFW. I was one of thousands of passengers lined up at terminal restaurants to get something to eat and struck up a conversation with the guy ahead of me in line. We both agreed to share a table to expedite our dining experience. That’s how I met Chris Pienaar who is a managing director with Bayer CropScience. During our brief visit I learned Chris shares the same purpose-based approach to business that I do and we had a very… Read More

Leadership lessons from a cowboy named Rooster and a horse named Clyde

By Jim Whitt When I hired on as a pen rider at Wheatheart Feeders in 1972 there were roughly 20 cowboys and 60 company horses. The longest tenured hands got the pick of the best horses leaving the newest cowboys — forgive the pun — saddled with the worst. Wheatheart had a good-looking buckskin that had a reputation for bucking. Since the seasoned cowboys preferred function over form the buckskin ended up being ridden by one of the newer hands who were more enamored with the horse’s color and conformation. The buckskin ended up as a mount for a new… Read More

If you want to know how I can help your business…

By Jim Whitt In The Country of the Blind, H.G. Wells writes about a mountaineer, a man named Nunez, who stumbles into a country inhabited exclusively by blind people. As the only person in the country who can see, Nunez is intent on educating the blind inhabitants about the wonderful world of sight. He believes that a well-known proverb has indeed become a reality: “In the country of the blind, the one-eyed man is king.” And Nunez has two good eyes. Nunez has eyes but no one in this new place has any idea what eyes are. They have evolved… Read More

The new theory of relativity

My week started cohosting the Power of Purpose in Business Radio program with Nathan Mitchell on Sunday night. Our guest was my good friend Mitch Counce, who is CEO of Servi-Tech, Inc. Servi-Tech has been a client of mine since 2007. Mitch talked about how they have implemented the principles from my book, Riding for the Brand: The Power of Purposeful Leadership to transform their company. The bottom line results are a 50% increase in revenue over the last five years. Keep in mind that has been during the worst economy our nation has experienced since the Great Depression. Mitch… Read More

The Power of Purpose in Business Radio Show

I am now cohosting The Power of Purpose in Business on BlogTalkRadio with my friend and fellow consultant Nathan Mitchell.  We feature guests who talk about how the power of purpose is transforming their lives and businesses. On a recent broadcast Gerald Daniels shared how he discovered his purpose in life while serving a life sentence in prison. He was miraculously paroled five years later and today runs a multi-million dollar business. Nearly 4,000 people have downloaded this program since it was originally broadcast. You can listen to it in its entirety at http://tinyurl.com/a77xesb. Our next broadcast will feature Mitch… Read More

What you can learn about purpose from a HOG

By Jim Whitt My friend Don Riley sent me this email after the holidays: Hi Jim, Hope you and your family had a wonderful holiday season. I don’t know why it just popped into my head, but I have belonged to an organization for the past 10 years that epitomizes your purpose principle. The organization is called Harley Owners Group or HOG for short.  It was formed in 1983 by the Harley-Davidson Motor Company after the executives bought the company back from AMF. The purpose of Harley Owners Group has remained the same for 29 years.  The ONLY purpose of… Read More

The Big 12: A case study on how to destroy a partnership

By Jim Whitt If you’ve read Riding for the Brand: The Power of Purposeful Leadership, you know there are four principles for leaders to follow in order to create a model organization: 1. Purpose 2. Partnering 3. Pioneering 4. Profit The key words are “in order” — you start with purpose and end with profit. Not the other way around. Apparently, leaders of the universities that comprise the Big 12 Conference haven’t read the book. Those of us who reside in the Big 12 geography are witnessing a case study of what happens when you get the principles bassackwards. What is destroying the Big… Read More
