What if we all gave thanks for everything we have?

I was on the phone this week with Noel Ledermann, a longtime reader who told me that he has shared the following article with many people over the years. It’s one that reminds us of why we should be thankful this Thanksgiving. By Sondra Whitt In a workshop I facilitated recently, one participant was struggling to keep a positive attitude at work while she was surrounded by overwhelming negativity. While there were several helpful suggestions offered by different participants, she finally came to the conclusion that her best solution was to deliberately practice positive self-talk. She realized that she had… Read More

The new theory of relativity

My week started cohosting the Power of Purpose in Business Radio program with Nathan Mitchell on Sunday night. Our guest was my good friend Mitch Counce, who is CEO of Servi-Tech, Inc. Servi-Tech has been a client of mine since 2007. Mitch talked about how they have implemented the principles from my book, Riding for the Brand: The Power of Purposeful Leadership to transform their company. The bottom line results are a 50% increase in revenue over the last five years. Keep in mind that has been during the worst economy our nation has experienced since the Great Depression. Mitch… Read More

Useless College Degrees

By Jim Whitt I read an article that listed the five most useless college degrees and found out my degree is number four on the list. This really upset me. I paid a lot for that degree. Actually, a pretty good argument could be made that all college degrees are worthless. I have a nephew who graduated from high school last year and will make over $80,000 in his first year working for an oilfield service company. Bill Gates and Steve Jobs were college dropouts and became billionaires. We have been conditioned to believe that to be successful we’re supposed… Read More

Oil and water may not mix but they certainly go together

By Jim Whitt Retired U.S. Army Gen. Stanley McChrystal made an interesting point about Iraq in a recent speech: “They have a couple of big advantages — they have water, which for a country like that is a huge value, and of course they’re on a sea of oil.” Note that he placed water ahead of oil when he talked about advantages. Both commodities are valuable but which do you read and hear about in the news? Oil, because it provides the fuel for the internal combustion engine which powers our vehicles. So, the price of gasoline is foremost in… Read More

How We Can Create Millions of Jobs and Pump Billions of Dollars into the Economy

By Jim Whitt There are over 600 million passenger cars in the world not to mention a few million planes, trains, buses and trucks. 99% of these modes of transportation are propelled by internal combustion engines which are fueled by our most abundant natural resource – fossil fuel. Yes, there are alternative sources of energy and I’m all for them. In my book, Riding for the Brand: The Power of Purposeful Leadership, I paint a picture of a future where hydrogen powered vehicles are the norm. And I look forward to the day when that happens. But I’m a practical… Read More
