Stubborn & Unreasonable? From Whose Point of View?

By Sondra Whitt Someone, let’s call her Jane, was giving me an update on the health of an 88-year-old who is a mutual relative-by-marriage. This gentleman is dying with cancer and had declined to go into the hospital or hospice, nor did he want anyone to come into his home to care for him. The last I heard, he wasn’t going to subject himself to chemo, etc. either. Jane said he was just being “stubborn and unreasonable.” I didn’t comment since I was reminded of how she had been “stubborn and unreasonble” in the past … from her son’s point of view. I hold the viewpoint that whether or… Read More

Different Strokes for Different Folks

By Sondra Whitt I get a kick, sometimes at least, out of people who get so defensive and argumentative over differing opinions. They feel they have to set you straight about how your opinion or belief is wrong and theirs is right. For example, I got several chuckles reading Alan Weiss’ blog this morning about using blogs, twitter, facebook, etc. in getting business. The misunderstandings, misquotes, name-calling, oh my! GREAT Customer Service

It seems like bad customer service gets the most attention … maybe because sometimes it seems that it’s much more common or normal than good customer service. I’ve noticed there are a lot of instances of fairly good customer service that we experience every day … the kind that is okay but nothing to write home about. The kind that is usually the norm for a lot of businesses. Well, there’s nothing “normal” about the customer service we get from Geek Rescue, a computer support business here in Tulsa.

The Other Side of the Coin

By Sondra Whitt I guess it was too good to be true … a cafe where we loved to go, not only for the food and atmosphere but also for the service. All of which were consistently good. We hadn’t been for a few weeks so we stopped in recently and were disappointed to see that neither of our two favorite servers were there and our “usual” table was occupied. Should’ve been our first clues. We ordered an appetizer to share, which was just as excellent as it has always been and then each ordered a bowl of soup. Lobster bisque… Read More

Animusic Videos

By Sondra Whitt Have you seen and heard the Animusic Videos? They’re wonderfully creative! Here are a couple that I especially liked, although they’re all impressive. http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=-4495784199388479691 http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=2942922314315974986&q=genre%3Aanimat

A Victimhood Attitude

By Sondra Whitt Speaker, author and consultant Dr. Alan Weiss had an interesting piece in his newsletter Balancing Act that reminded me of a conversation I recently had with a client. “John” was insisting that his boss “held him back” and was the reason he was stuck where he was, doing what he was doing. Here’s what Weiss had to say about that kind of attitude … “Part of victimhood is believing (or merely claiming) that the job, the boss, the environment, the government, the regulations, and/or “they” are preventing you from doing well. The antithesis of victimhood is the… Read More

Good coffee and good customer service at Border’s

By Sondra Whitt A friend and I stopped by the coffee shop in a nearby Borders bookstore recently and part of the fun was seeing how much the young barista was enjoying his job. He informed me that he was going to make me the best cup of coffee I’d have all weekend – and then he did! When I declined the whipped cream on my Chocolate Raspberry Kiss, he suggested that he could use sugar-free raspberry syrup and then I could get the whipped cream. Since I was already having such a decadent cup of coffee, I wasn’t really concerned… Read More

Common Sense Customer Service

By Sondra Whitt  Who would’ve thought that Jim and I could get an inspired idea at McDonald’s? That’s exactly what happened last Sunday when we stopped by for a breakfast burrito. We walked in and we heard a loud, disembodied voice saying, “Welcome to McDonald’s, can I help you?” Although we hadn’t walked up to the counter, we lowered our gazes from the menu high up on the wall to the young man standing behind the counter with his back to us. Since he hadn’t once turned to look at us, at least that we’d seen, we didn’t answer him. But apparently this… Read More
