Paula Lau

Changing who we are and how we approach life can be one of the most intimidating challenges put before us and yet, most of us want to do just that. We're stuck in a rut, addicted to our behavior, so how do we change it? Paula Lau, a Licensed Professional Counselor and Addiction Specialist, has been fulfiling her purpose of "inspiring and transforming lives" since 1997 through the vehicles of compassionate counsel and interactive education. She counsels, speaks, and conducts workshops on topics dealing with the addictions, unhealthy relationships, and narrowed perspective that can all be roadblocks on our road to success. Audiences enjoy Paula's non-confrontational, interactive style and the humor, philosophy and inspiring stories she uses to help her listeners create their own roadmap to a healthier and happier life.

Paula has a Bachelors degree from Doane College in Crete, Nebraska and completed her Masters degree in Counseling at Oral Roberts University in 2000. She is a Licensed Professional Counselor as well as a Licensed Alcohol and Drug Abuse Counselor and currently works at Tulsa Center for Behavioral Health as a clinician, where she has received numerous accolades based on her effective use of therapeutic approaches with her clients. Paula worked for two years as an educator and community liaison for Domestic Violence Intervention Service, where she worked regularly with law enforcement officers as well as the general public. She has been selected as a Change Agent for the State of Oklahoma, addressing issues of trauma, substance abuse and mental health. She is also an Adjunct Instructor for the Tulsa Community College Corporate and Business Learning Center.

Among the workshops Paula has faciliated are: Working with Difficult People, Effective Conferencing, Team Building and Participation, as well as a host of workshops on substance abuse, counseling, mental health, and trauma issues.

Addiction Issues

Have you noticed a devotion, dedication, attachment or inclination towards something that in the back of your mind you have been concerned may not be good for you?  Welcome to the world of addiction.  Addiction happens when we begin to use something or someone to cope with stressful or emotionally disturbing aspects of our lives.  In many cases, addictions will not necessarily end in broken relationships, lost jobs, etc. but they may be stealing important aspects of your time and energy.  You may find that engaging in those behaviors do not get the results that you want.   Paula will help you understand and apply the stages of change, direct you to the resources for help and empower you to make changes in a positive direction for your life.

Reducing Anxiety and Depression

Life is supposed to be a joyful experience.  However, for some 15 million American adults with major depression accompanied by severe anxiety, life is anything but that.  Many people suffer from depression without understanding its full impact on their lives or the sources from which it may come.   Often times people suffer in silence believing there is no way out.   Join with us in discussing the roots and cycle of depression and anxiety.  Find out if you or someone you love may have a problem that requires professional assistance.  Find out effective ways to sidetrack a downward depression or anxiety cycle as well as preventative measures for the future. 

 

Ten Components of Effective Recovery

Oklahoma is considered to be one of the leading states in the nation when it comes to working with individuals who are struggling with mental illness, substance abuse and trauma.  In this presentation participants will learn about the Ten Components of Effective Recovery and the role of community in recovery.  Participants will be encouraged to look at their views concerning drug addiction and alcoholism.  Moving and compelling stories of the individuals who have overcome their multiple challenges as well as data that informs and inspires is utilized to enhance this learning experience as participants learn the best practices for working with individuals who are diagnosed with substance abuse, mental illness and trauma.
